Automobile University – The way I learn
The number one question is always, “where do you find the time?”
I have almost completely stopped listening to music in the car. I treat my commute every day as if it was a college course. Listening to the news or some other dramatic time-wasting content does not cut it anymore. I have become highly selective about how I spend that precious daily hour.
The funny thing is, I always thought that the only way for me to learn something is by taking notes. Something I realized about myself during flight school is that everyone can learn through repetition. For example, for a while it was difficult for me to understand all the details of owning a rental property within a Limited Liability Company (LLC). But after listening to several podcasts explaining why it is important, the concept and all of its supporting arguments began to sink in.
The following list of three podcasts are my “go-to” for real estate investing information.
- If you want to hit the basics hard, I would listen to Clayton Morris’ podcast first. It provides a wealth of foundational information, explained in a very newbie-friendly tone. Almost all the fundamentals of residential real estate investing are covered. My favourite episodes are 19 and 22 with Tom Wheelwright, the founder of my CPA firm, ProVision.
- Rod Khleif is a true mentor. I had a 30-minute call with him that I set up on his website. It was fantastic. It was scheduled three months out because of his popularity, but it was well worth it. He saved me from making a big mistake early on and I have him to thank for it. He focuses on multifamily properties, which is my favourite kind of real estate investing.
- Bigger Pockets is where every real estate enthusiast ends up sooner or later. It’s the Mecca of Real Estate discussion and networking. Not only is their podcast phenomenal, they also publish some great books and various other guides and resources. Be sure to check them out. If you have questions, post in the forum, and you will be amazed at how responsive the community is.
Two favorite online business podcasts:
- Pat Flynn’s podcast, Smart Passive Income, is what started everything. After listening to episode 192, 193, and 194… I was hooked. Pat is one of the most genuine entrepreneurs on the planet. His method of teaching is something I aspire to. His podcast is also incredible. He has a cult following of people that had their online business jump start thanks to all the free information he provides.
- The Art Of Paid Traffic. I can’t believe how long it took me to discover this podcast. It is hyper-focused on mastering Facebook ads, but the interviews provide so much more. It is a little more varsity, but it is still extremely helpful. My personal opinion is that paid traffic is the key to success in the online business realm.
My two all-time favorite books:
The single biggest shift in my financial mindset was when I read “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Tim Ferriss.
I stopped wanting large amounts of money and started striving for passive streams of income.
Do you really want to retire with a million dollars, or would you rather earn $10,000 every month? Once I read this book, it was easy to see that I really preferred the latter.
Personally, I recommend listening to the book first, and then going through the hardcover as a textbook for follow-up material.
This book changed my perspective on Real Estate forever. Best of all, it is a very quick read.
If you have ever read any other book on real estate or listened to any Real Estate Investing podcast, you have probably heard someone mention that the “Purple Bible” was what got them started.
This is a mindset book. If you are scared of starting Real Estate investing, this book will change the way you look at Real Estate forever.
Rich Dad Poor Dad really puts investing and retirement into perspective, I cannot recommend it enough!
